Record Review ####$4!!!!
Howdy Tumblers!
Grandpa is here once more with another record review to keep you informed on all the cool music that’s out there.
This time around I decided to go with an outside reccomendation. I went where I do most of my shopping at Value Village (where I’m sure some I’ve seen some of you kids) and I went straight for the CD section and asked a fellow what’s the newest coolest album they sold there, and he slid this thing across the table. I took one look at the cover, and I just KNEW this cd was going to be OUT THERE!
Now I may be accused of being a little behind the times, but I know when something is going to be  popular and based on appearance alone, it doesn’t look like the Coneheads are going to be catching on in the American Cultural Landscape or Zeitgeist, if you will. Their kind of outlandish appearance is going to be a little shocking to some people, kind of like Record Review #3’s Klaus Nomi, but I guarantee if you decide to put some of your initial misgivings aside you’re going to be in for one wild ride. This CD runs through all kinds of musical genres, so it’s got a little something for everybody. And since the cover is going to turn some people off, if you say you like it now, you could be a part in making something that people like to call a “cult album” which is a CD that nobody else likes, but YOU DO!
It seems like the actual Coneheads don’t do much singing, since there’s more than just the 3 people on the cover singing throughout all the songs, so I think the three Coneheads are more musical masterminds and instrumentalists who let other singers take the lead. I really like that. It shows that they don’t have a lot of ego and they’re happy as long as the song itself gets out there, no matter who sings it. You can hear the Coneheads musical direction on songs like “Magic Carpet Ride” “Tainted Love” and “Soul To Squeeze” which are sure fire hits if you ask me.
But don’t fret if you’re worried you’re not going to be able to hear from the Coneheads themselves, because on the last song from the CD things get FUNKY with their song “Conehead Love” and members Beldar and Prymatt RAP about loving each other. Now you may not have expected some hiphop from these guys, but this is some of the best rapping I’ve heard yet. I’ve never heard such a touching rap about someone wanting to be with someone else. Beldar sings he “Don’t want to hold my Cone alone” and I think we all know how he feels. It’s tough being alone sometimes, and I hope these two stay together, that way it’ll be a little less lonely for all of us out there in this crazy world.
If you can’t tell, I really liked this CD it really took me by surprise, so tell your friends about it and maybe we can give it the attention it deserves. I’m not sure where you can buy it, but my local Value Village had one other copy, the cover was pretty wrinkled, but it looked like it played great!
I give it 3 cones out of 3.
